Regolith and host rock influences on CO2 leakage: Active source seismic profiling across the Little Grand Wash fault, Utah

چکیده

Understanding carbon dioxide (CO2) reservoir to surface migration is crucial successful capture and sequestration approaches; especially fault/reservoir interactions under injection pressure. Through seismic imaging, we explore regolith shallow stratigraphy across the Little Grand Wash fault. The presence of natural CO2 seeps, travertine tufa deposits confirm modern ancient fault-controlled leakage. We consider this an analogue for a long-failed site. estimate bulk porosity fracture density host rock, regolith, fault zone from petrophysical relationships. When combined with existing geochemical geological data, characterize 60 m wide damage that represents primary delivery channel originating depths. Within zone, low velocities suggest sediments have formed through rock chemical dissolution or mechanical weathering. In contrast, within adjacent are consistent clastic rocks. measure anomalously high along one profile best sealed (cemented/plugged) permeability, relic flow channel. This suggests permeability varies strike. While regional stress changes may account decadal- millennial-scale in pathways, speculate total fluid pressure has locally reduced fault's minimum horizontal effective stress; thereby producing both low- high-permeability segments either block promote migration. Studying system can inform potential risks future projects guide monitoring efforts.

Mineral carbonation in peridotite rock for CO2 sequestration and a method of leakage reduction of CO2 in the rock

In the recent years, the amounts of green house gases have dramatically increased. This situation led to changing in climate conditions. One of the effective ways to reduce these amounts in atmosphere is CO2 capturing from huge spreading sources and injection it into geological formations. Peridotite is a type of rock that reacts with CO2 at higher rate when compared to the other rocks. Since t...

Seismic detection of CO2 leakage along monitoring wellbores

A pilot carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration experiment was carried out in the Michigan Basin in which 10,000 tonnes of supercritical CO2was injected into the Bass Island Dolomite (BILD) at 1050 mdepth. A passive seismic monitoring (PSM) network was operated before, during and after the 17-day injection period. The seismic monitoring network consisted of two arrays of eight, three-component senso...

An Evaluation of Rock Integrity and Fault Reactivation in the Cap Rock and Reservoir Rock Due to Pressure Variations

Cap rocks are dams which can prevent the upward movement of hydrocarbons. They have disparities and weaknesses including discontinuities, crushed areas, and faults. Gas injection is an effective mechanism for oil recovery and pore pressure. With increasing pore pressure, normal stress is reduced, and the integrity of impermeable boundaries (cap rock, fault, etc.) becomes instable. A successful ...
